The WHF Community Games Day

The  Community Project got off to a fantastic start with two hours of fun and frolics in the Keystone Centre Park.  Over a hundred parents and children took part in giant games (pick-up sticks, garden archery and connect four), sack races, beat the goalie, air ice hockey and water balloon hurling! There were prizes, music and lots of chocolatey and jammy faces as a result of the ‘donuts on string’ eating competition and the fruit dipped in the chocolate fountain – the queues for that were enormous.

Volunteers from mingled with the crowds helping with the games and chatting to residents about the different projects is keen to get up and running on the estate with the help of resident volunteers.  There was loads of enthusiasm for the Butterfly Reading Project and the ‘Breaking down the Barriers’ intergenerational film and technology project.  Lots of young people showed an interest in the FA football project and the Mums and Dads were particularly supportive of the drugs information project and the parenting workshops. There were a number of helpers on hand to oversee and join in the games and also a large contingent from the local police who were marvellous.

The  team also talked to residents about the proposed plans to renovate the Haven Centre and the MUGA (also known as the BMX).  The Haven Centre is set for a complete refurbishment in early September followed closely by the renovation of the MUGA. Extra seating, an additional pod, more bins, safer steps and paths have all been suggested and plans are afoot to get it all done with the help of volunteers at the end of September.

All in all the day was a great success; the sun shone, laughter reigned and everyone went away smiling with a t-shirt on their back and stickers everywhere else!
